The Body Mass Index Essay Example
The Body Mass Index Paper The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a proportion between the stature and weight of an individual, determined by the heaviness of the individual (in kilograms) by their tallness squared (in meters). Abdomen to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is viewed as the factor that signals female richness and wellbeing. This is on the grounds that solid, premenstrual ladies store fat on their lower body parts bringing about a female trademark, while guys store fat on their chest area parts. While considering the impact of WHR, alone, on allure lower estimations of the WHR are viewed as progressively appealing, with values between 0.6-0. 7 being maximally alluring. Engaging quality isn't just founded on the WHR yet additionally on the BMI. Females with low BMI esteems (underweight) and exceptionally high BMI esteems (overweight) are viewed as ugly, with the center of the BMI esteem run viewed as alluring and solid. Be that as it may, it is that impacts of both these components have upon the impression of appeal that has lead to explore. Numerous trials have been led so as to comprehend which of these two contributing elements are progressively significant in the impression of female engaging quality. Discoveries by Devendra Singh (1994) reason that the two people made a decision about heavier female pictures with low WHRs as more appealing and more advantageous than more slender pictures with higher WHRs. These outcomes show that both the WHR and BMI are impressive contributing elements to the view of engaging quality. The perfect picture has stemmed numerous other research thoughts and it has been discovered that ladies picked flimsy female figures as perfect and see their own figure as fatter than the perfect (Fallon and Rozin 1985, refered to in Singh 1994). Studies have lead to the suspicion that the WHR and BMI impact various parts of pictures that all amalgamate into the view of how alluring that picture is. BMI is by all accounts increasingly compelling in the view of energy (Singh 1994) and considers have discovered that WHR could be identified with fruitfulness and the propensity to bring forth guys, as opposed to females (Tovee Cornelissen, 1999). Past investigations have demonstrated that the BMI is the more compelling element in the view of engaging quality representing over 70% of the numerous relapse examination where WHR represents just 2%. This would propose that the aftereffect of this trial would be comparable and that BMI is the more significant contributing element. In any case, as referenced beforehand, Singh (1994) presumed that ladies judge view of allure considering the WHR more than the BMI. It has been proposed that in present day society a premium has been set on slimness and in this way it has brought about the general presumption that slender is appealing. This has unquestionably been the situation in more Westernized civilisations where low WHR is liked. Be that as it may, in progressively customary social orders a higher WHR is favored as higher WHR is identified with the propagation of children. In this way, in social orders that esteem children over little girls a progressively rounded molded ladies is liked. This may likewise be expected to the medias portrayal of alluring, which in numerous social orders is meager, along these lines incompletely clarifying the fixation on consuming less calories and the battle to turn out to be slight. This carries notice to the issues of dietary problems and how they influence a people view of allure. Morris et al (1989) found that over a multi year time frame (1959-1978) the heaviness of Miss America Pageant contenders and Playboy centerfolds altogether diminished. Nonetheless, it was likewise discovered that normal midsection size expanded and bust and hip size diminished, bringing about a progressively cylindrical molded lady. The general end was that in the course of the most recent three decades a huge change in the admired female body shape has happened. In any case, later examinations demonstrated that Morris et al results were wrong and that when the real WHRs were registered they stayed inside a female 0. 68-0. 72 territory accordingly, obviously indicating that the subjects were not turning into a progressively cylindrical shape (Singh 1994). Speculation: BMI will be fundamentally more significant than WHR in deciding the engaging quality of a female body. Invalid Hypothesis: There will be no critical contrast between the BMI and WHR in deciding the engaging quality of the female body Method Apparatus: The main device included was the genuine PC program. The PC program included various pictures of the state of the female body. These pictures were clearly and the figure wore a skin tight leotard. The appearances were obscured out so there was no inclination in the engaging quality of the facial highlights. Subjects: The whole brain science class occurred in the investigation. The sex of the gathering was blended. Albeit a huge extent of the class was female. The age of the stage two understudies was prevalently between 19-22 years old. They were nai ve in the planned result of the investigation now. Methodology: The Body Mass Index (BMI) and the midriff to-hip proportion were being explored. The subjects were given a progression of 50 female pictures in front view on a VDU screen. The pictures differed in Body Mass Index and in midriff to-hip proportion. The subjects were then approached to rate each picture on a size of 0-9, composing their rating into the PC. The first run through the subjects experienced a training run with the goal that they could gage their general thought for the appraisals. The second time the outcomes were tallied and spared, and pooled along with the remainder of the classs results.

When it comes to bonafide credentials, the good people behind SelfPublishingAdvice.org and The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) exhibit some hard-hitting experience in their fields. The Self Publishing Advice Center is one of the ways in which ALLi contributes to the community. They also advocate for self-publishing authors within the publishing business, at rights fairs and other events, and promote self-publishing as a viable and creative option for authors. Their mission is excellence and ethics in self-publishing, and they do a lot of work in both arenas.Orna Ross is the managing editor and director of both the Alliance of Independent Authors and SelfPublishingAdvice.org. More than just a huge job title though, she has experience negotiating ex actly the type of claims that an independent publisher might encounter. In 2011, Orna took her publishing rights back from Penguin Publishing. Then, in 2012, Orna launched ALLi, seeking opportunities for publishers like her which were unavailable through traditional publishing routes. She went on to publish several works of fiction, non-fiction, and even poetry; and, of course, she was recognized for all this as one of The 100 most influential people in publishing according to Bookseller Magazine.Orna Ross creative team is equally impressive: Debbie Young is the commissioning editor and ALLi UK ambassador. She writes, of course â" short stories and author guidebooks; but, more importantly, she is a founding creator of the Hawkesbury Upton Literature Festival, and the co-host alongside David Penny of the Ask ALLi Self-Publishing QA Podcast. Other members of the team are Michael La Ronn who is an author of over 30 science fiction and fantasy novels, as well as Dan Holloway who is a j ournalist, editor, and performer with The New Libertines. He is famous for his spoken prose and slam poetry. These are the type of people who know the field and who can teach others from experience. Of course, the team isnt all about publishing and writing: John Doppler and David Penny contribute articles and advice regarding e-publishing and other technologies useful for authors, and Jay Artale writes content designed to help independent authors create a social media presence. They really are the whole package.Alright, but whats in it for me?Reliable free resources organized by need are the calling cards of this site. It presents helpful articles and exemplary social media outreach. This site has its hands in everything â" blogs, journal articles, podcasts, instructional videos, and guest post submissions from leaders in the fields of digital, traditional, and self-publishing. The site contains the backbone articles weve come to expect â" writing advice pieces on the snowflake me thod and discussions of events in the literary world like the sensation that is National Novel Writing Month (an event that has been growing steadily each year since it was imagined and launched in 1999). The site then leads you step-by-step through the process of taking your written word, and helping it reach the masses.EditingEditing discussions unique to independent editors are approached with the know-how of those who have gone through the process. Topics such as beta readers, do-it-yourself editing tools, and resources for seeking out a professional editor are all available â" and all presented by people who have been there and done that.DesignSelfPublishingAdvice.org offers articles on how to choose software (on a budget or otherwise) which will help the aspiring self-publisher create a manuscript ready for any digital format, or which can then be sent direct to the printing house. What really shines in the design section are the video essay reviews of each and every popular cover design process, from ready-made templates and pre-made covers to working with bespoke and the true do-it-yourself. All of these design processes are described in detail with visual examples, often taken from the authors own stable of covers.ProductionIn terms of production, the advice given is a treasure trove. Articles cover every method of distribution, as well as everything from file formats â" their benefits and drawbacks â" to the methods which will make the most of your time when publishing with the big-name distributors like Smashwords and Amazon.PromotionThe promotion section of the website offers step-by-step videos for designing an author website and creating a social media presence on Goodreads, Facebook, and Twitter. What is really valuable though are the unique angles given for promotion. The site includes videos which describe how to design book promotions, and how to get the most out of those promotions, as well as how to avoid the pitfalls of investing too mu ch or too little in promotion. It offers a host of offline activities which can be beneficial to an independent publisher, and tips for optimizing your relevance on search engines within sites like Amazon or Smashwords.Rights and contracts (legalese)This section is essential. It covers topics such as selling the rights to your work in a foreign country, landing that big film deal, and what contracts to sign â" and which ones to avoid. Two pieces which stood out in this section were the podcast on legal essentials and the IPR and TMA Alli initiatives. The first is a brilliant starting point for indie authors who dont want to lawyer up, and the last two are initiatives which strive to provide licensing consultations and rights protection services, respectively.Time and moneyTime and money are the bottom line for some of us (and a headache of a distraction for others). This section of SelfPublishingAdvice.org cant be ignored by any of us. It includes advice regarding recent trends lik e crowdfunding: how to go about it, what monetary goal to set, how to manage expectations, and building your campaign. It also does a superb job of providing advice regarding traditional concerns such as the following: how to earn a living wage; how to pay taxes when selling in multiple countries; and answering the age-old question art or commerce? How can I act on all of this advice?Contrary to its namesake, SelfPublishingAdvice.org hasnt limited itself to just offering great advice. The website features a showcase of works by members of the Alliance of Independent Authors, and opportunities to write for the Self-Publishing Advice Community Blog. Each of these is a good way for new authors to be seen, and for experienced authors to pass on their wisdom.Better though are the self-publishing services provided by the website â" especially their watchdog reports and vetting service. ALLi has an independent code of standards against which they measure publishers and companies affiliated with the self-publishing industry (illustration houses, printing presses, etc.). Vetting by ALLi can let a self-publisher know if the rates charged by the company are appropriate to the service rendered, and can identify a presence or lack of credible testimonials from previous clients. These watchdog reports help the individual author avoid being taken advantage of, which is basically ALLis modus operandi: indie authors helping and protecting other indie authors. Finally, for those of us looking for a quick overview, ALLi publishes ratings and reviews of self-publishing services and writing and publishing contests. This system clearly labels each contest and company as either reliable or unreliable, and offers reasoning for each qualification. For example, one publishing press has a watchdog advisory posted for a staggering number of complaints regarding transparency, marketing and quality, which is of course a major red flag independent authors would be wise to notice before entru sting their work to such a company. If only for peace of mind, the watchdog ratings offered in the Self-Publishing Services section of the site are invaluable. The really cool stuff: Indie Author Fringe ConferenceIndie Author Fringe is a three-times a year online conference for self-publishing authors. This is the type of event that is likely to present avenues to a self-publishing author which they wouldnt otherwise discover. Each event includes speakers from a wide variety of fields related to self-publishing, and a number of competitions designed to help your book reach your audience. If that werent enough, SelfPublishingAdvice.org offers a weekly podcast which is not only a useful resource, but an easy listen, and includes guests with a wide variety of experiences in the field. Each of these is about thirty minutes long, and packed full from beginning to end with helpful hints for anyone in the publishing industry.Okay⦠what if I want more?SelfPublishingAdvice.org is a non-profi t organization. All of the resources described above are offered completely free of charge. The Alliance of Independent Authors is also a non-profit organization. They charge a fee to pay their staff and team, but all profits go to benefit the indie author community. They offer a host of pay-to-play resources which are aimed at the aspiring or current indie author, and should be within the budget of most interested parties. These come in the form of membership in the alliance, which offers a host of resources and a supportive community of other self-publishers, and in the form of guidebooks. These guidebooks are detailed electronic manuals which address a variety of issues, and usually come in at about ten dollars for 200+ pages of advice. The take awayFree has been and will forever be a good price for information, but of course not all wisdom is created equal. Its only natural to want advice from those who understand their field. The advice offered at SelfPublishingAdvice.org is not only pertinent, but it is well-organized and presented in a clear and professional manner. Writers, publishers, and designers who are visiting the site can easily find the articles and resources most pertinent to their immediate needs, and can be confident that the writers who develop articles for the site and design other content such as podcasts and videos are respected in their fields. They can recognize partners of the site such as Amazon Create Space and Apple iBooks, and be reassured that these are reliable companies which they can trust. There is a quantity of writing and publishing advice on the internet which is ever-growing, but SelfPublishingAdvice.org is a source of high-quality, professionally-sourced, and experience-backed advice targeted directly at specific problems encountered by independent publishers.

America s Expansion Of The New Lands - 852 Words
The Manifest Destiny was in nature a benevolent movement and it was also seen as a well-intended deal that was bound to make the country more successful through the means of expanding its boundaries over a vast area. However, the approach which the nation took in the acquisition of the new lands suggests differently as it did in fact greatly benefit America but was truly a much more aggressive form of imperialism. Americaââ¬â¢s strive to move westward was a thought since the very beginning and expansion helped portray the countryââ¬â¢s true potential. This was clearly seen throughout the entire first half of the 19th century. Starting in the year 1803, the United States government purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon I of France, under the lead of President Thomas Jefferson. With the purchase, the country doubled in size and only increased the movement of people into the interior of the continent. By 1820, settlers had moved well beyond the Mississippi River, and as years passed it was evident that the west was increasing much more rapidly than the rest of the nation. In the 1840s, the United States had made many significant purchases and additions to the countryââ¬â¢s land. One of these was the annexation of Texas. In the 1820s the U.S. attempted to purchase Texas from Mexico twice but both offers were refused. When Should Transgender Identification Begin - Youth or...
Research on Transgender Identification in Youth or Adulthood The question at hand is whether or not it is more beneficial for a person with gender dysphoria to be able to express the gender for which they identify with at a young age, or later, in adulthood. In regards to sociology, symbolic interactionism is ideal for examining the way in which sociological theory relates to transgender issues. This is because symbolic interactionism is the study of how people relate to one another and their environment, but specifically how the relations between each other have an effect on their environment. Blumerââ¬â¢s conceptualization of symbolic interactionism, known as the situational approach is the one most often used in sex research (Longmore,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hopefully, by gaining insight into these interactions, it will help inform whether or not it is beneficial for a child to be able to express their gender identity at a young age or whether it is more beneficial for them to wait until adulthood. A theory that would give insight into the research question in relation to psychology would be identity theory. Stryker and Burke (2006) have the most relevant ideas on identity theory that would inform the research question. In identity theory, it is used to show how people identify with being a particular type of person; how they take on social roles and belong to social groups (Burke, 2006). Stryker claimed that the greater number of people one is committed to being a certain type of person around the more they identify with being that type of person (Burke, 2006). This poses interesting insight into the research question of whether or not it is beneficial for a child to express their gender identity at a young age and be ââ¬Å"outâ⬠with everyone they know, or for an adult to have to slowly bring their identity into existence among people individually and how this may have an effect on the person. Night World Witchlight Chapter 3 Free Essays
Keller turned her head quickly. Nissa was standing there, cool and imperturbable as always, one hand on her hip. Her short mink-colored hair wasnââ¬â¢t even ruffled; her eyes, just a shade or two darker, were steady. We will write a custom essay sample on Night World : Witchlight Chapter 3 or any similar topic only for you Order Now And she was holding an ironwood fighting stick with a very sharp point. Keller growled faintly in relief. You couldnââ¬â¢t ask Nissa to be creative-her mind didnââ¬â¢t work that way. But on any question of logic, she was unbeatable, and she had nerves of ice. More important right now, she was a superb fighter. ââ¬Å"If you want to play, why donââ¬â¢t you try me?â⬠she suggested, and whipped the fighting stick around expertly a few times. It whistled in the air, traced a complicated figure, and ended up casually across her shoulder. Then she slowly extended the point toward the vampireââ¬â¢s throat. ââ¬Å"Yeah, and donââ¬â¢t leave me out.â⬠This voice was husky and shaky but still grim. It came from behind the counter. Winnie was pulling herself up. She coughed once, then stood straight, facing the vampire. Energy, orange and pulsating, flared between her cupped hands. Witch power. Youââ¬â¢re alive, Keller thought. She couldnââ¬â¢t suppress the flash of relief. The vampire looked from one girl to the other. Then he glanced at Keller, who was lying on her side, feebly trying to make her legs work. Her tail lashed furiously. ââ¬Å"Come on!â⬠the other vampire shouted. He was staggering under the weight of the dragon, heading for the door. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s get Azhdeha out of here. Heââ¬â¢s the most important thing.â⬠The first vampire hesitated one instant, then whirled and plunged after his friend. Together, they hustled the dragon out into the mall. Then they were gone. Keller gave one final gasping snarl and felt herself change. This time, it felt more like a snail falling out of a shell. Her claws dissolved, her tail withered, and she slumped into her human body. ââ¬Å"Boss! Are you okay?â⬠Winnie came toward her, a little unsteadily. Keller raised her head, black hair falling on either side to the floor. She pushed herself up with her arms and looked around, taking stock. The shop was quiet It was also a wreck. Winnieââ¬â¢s impact with the wall had knocked off most of the decorative plates and clocks there. Kellerââ¬â¢s fight with the dragon had trashed a lot of the shelves. There were shattered Christmas ornaments everywhere, little glittering fragments of scarlet and holly green and royal purple. It was like being in a giant kaleidoscope. And outside, chaos was gathering. The entire fight had only taken about five minutes, but all the time it had been going on, people had been running away from the shop and screaming. Keller had noticed them; she had simply filed them away in her mind as unimportant. There had been nothing she could do about them. Now, there were security officers closing in, and someone had undoubtedly called the police. She pushed with her arms again and managed to stand up. ââ¬Å"Nissa.â⬠It hurt her throat to speak. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s the car?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right down there.â⬠Nissa pointed at the floor. ââ¬Å"Directly below us, parked outside the Mrs. Fields cookie store.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Letââ¬â¢s get Diana out.â⬠Keller looked at the young girl with the shimmering hair who as yet hadnââ¬â¢t spoken a single word. ââ¬Å"Can you walk?â⬠Iliana stared at her. She didnââ¬â¢t say anything. Stunned and frightened, Keller guessed. Well, a lot had happened in the last few minutes. ââ¬Å"I know this all seems bizarre to you, and youââ¬â¢re probably wondering who we are.Ill explain everything. But right now, we have to get out of here. Okay?â⬠Iliana shrank a little, trembling. Not exactly a hero, Keller thought. Or quick on the uptake. Then she decided she was being unfair. This girl was the Witch Child; she undoubtedly had hidden strengths. ââ¬Å"Come on,â⬠Galen said to Iliana gently. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s right; it isnââ¬â¢t safe here.â⬠Iliana looked up at him earnestly. She seemed about to agree. Then she gave a little shiver, shut her eyes, and fainted. Galen caught her as she fell. Keller stared. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s too pure to deal with this kind of stuff,â⬠Winnie said defensively. ââ¬Å"Violence and all. Itââ¬â¢s not the same as being chicken.â⬠It was at that exact moment that Keller could pinpoint her first real doubts about the new Wild Power. Galen looked down at the girl who lay in his arms like a broken lily. He looked at Keller. ââ¬Å"You take her; well surround you and cover you,â⬠Keller said, cutting him off. She knew her hair was in complete disarray, a wild cyclone of black around her. Her sleek jumpsuit was torn and stained, and she was clutching her right shoulder, which still throbbed in agony. But she must have looked fairly commanding, because Galen didnââ¬â¢t say another word, just nodded and started toward the door. Nissa led the way in front of him. Winnie and Keller fell in behind. They were ready to fight, but when the security guards with walkie-talkies saw Nissa whirling her stick, they backed away. The ordinary people, curious onlookers attracted by all the noise, not only backed away but ran. Lots of them screamed. ââ¬Å"Go,â⬠Keller said. ââ¬Å"Fast. Go.â⬠They made it to Mrs. Fields without anybody trying to stop them. A girl with a red apron flattened herself against a wall as they thrust their way behind the counter and into the sanctum full of industrial-sized ovens in the back. A gangly boy dropped a tray with a clang, and lumps of raw cookie dough scattered on the floor. And then they were bursting through the back entrance, and there was the car, a white limousine illegally parked at the curb. Nissa whipped out a key chain and pressed a button, and Keller heard the click of doors unlocking. ââ¬Å"Inside!â⬠she said to Galen. He got in. Winnie ran around the car to get in the other side. Nissa slid into the driverââ¬â¢s seat. Keller ducked in last and snapped, ââ¬Å"Go!â⬠even as she slammed the door. Nissa floored it. The limousine shot forward like a dolphin-just as a security truck sped up from the rear. A police car appeared dead in front of them. Nissa was an excellent driver. The limo swerved with a squeal of tires and peeled out of another of the parking lotââ¬â¢s exits. A second police car swung toward them as Nissa dodged traffic. This one had lights and sirens on. Nissa gunned the engine, and the limo surged forward again. A freeway on-ramp was ahead. ââ¬Å"Hang on,â⬠Nissa said briefly. They were passing the on-ramp-they were past it. No, they werenââ¬â¢t. At the last possible second, the limo screamed into a ninety-degree turn. Everyone inside was thrown around. Keller clenched her teeth as her wounded arm hit the window. Then they were shooting up the on-ramp and onto the freeway. With a little patter, catââ¬â¢s paws of rain appeared on the windshield. Keller, leaning forward to look over Nissaââ¬â¢s shoulder, was happy. With icy rain and the low, gray fog, they probably wouldnââ¬â¢t be chased by helicopter. The big limousine roared past the few other cars on the road and Winnie sat looking out the rear window, murmuring a spell to confuse and delay any pursuit. ââ¬Å"We lost them,â⬠Nissa said. Keller sat back and let out her breath. For the first time since sheââ¬â¢d entered the mall, she allowed herself to relax minutely. We did it. At the same moment, Winnie turned. She pounded the backseat with a small, hard fist. ââ¬Å"We did it! Keller-we got the Wild Power! Weâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her voice trailed off as she saw Kellerââ¬â¢s face. ââ¬Å"And, uhâ⬠¦ I guess I disobeyed orders.â⬠Her pounding was self-conscious now; she ducked her strawberry-blond head. ââ¬Å"Um, Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Boss.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢d better be,â⬠Keller said. She held Winnieââ¬â¢s gaze a moment, then said, ââ¬Å"You could have gotten yourself killed, witch-and for absolutely no good reason.â⬠Winnie grimaced. ââ¬Å"I know. I lost it. Iââ¬â¢m sorry.â⬠But she smiled timidly at Keller afterward. Kellerââ¬â¢s team knew how to read her. ââ¬Å"Sorry, too, Boss,â⬠Nissa said from the front seat. She slanted a glance at Keller from her mink-colored eyes. ââ¬Å"I wasnââ¬â¢t supposed to leave the car.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you thought we might need a little help,â⬠Keller said. She nodded, meeting Nissaââ¬â¢s eyes in the mirror. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m glad you did.â⬠The faintest flush of pleasure colored Nissaââ¬â¢s cheeks. Galen cleared his throat. ââ¬Å"Um, for the record, Iââ¬â¢m sorry, too. I didnââ¬â¢t mean to charge in like that in the middle of your operation.â⬠Keller looked at him. He was smiling slightly, hesitantly, the way Winnie had. A nice smile. The corner of his mouth naturally quirked upward, giving him a hint of mischief in all but the most serious moments. His green-gold eyes were apologetic but hopeful. ââ¬Å"Yeah, who are you, guy?â⬠Winnie was looking him up and down, her dark lashes twinkling. ââ¬Å"Did Circle Daybreak send you? I thought we were on this mission alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"You were. I belong to Circle Daybreak, but they didnââ¬â¢t send me. I just-well, I was outside the shop, and I couldnââ¬â¢t just stand thereâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ His voice died. The smile died, too. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re really mad, arenââ¬â¢t you?â⬠he said to Keller. ââ¬Å"Mad?â⬠She took a slow breath. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m furious.â⬠He blinked. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You stopped me. I could have killed him!â⬠His gold-green eyes opened in shock and something like remembered pain. ââ¬Å"He was killing you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know that,â⬠Keller snarled. ââ¬Å"It doesnââ¬â¢t matter what happens to me. What matters is that now heââ¬â¢s free. Donââ¬â¢t you understand what he is?â⬠Winfrith was looking sober. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. But he hit me with something powerful. Pure energy like what I use, but about a hundred times stronger.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s a dragon,â⬠Keller said. She saw Nissaââ¬â¢s shoulders stiffen, but Winnie just shook her head, bewildered. ââ¬Å"A kind of shapeshifter that hasnââ¬â¢t been around for about thirty thousand years.â⬠ââ¬Å"He can turn into a dragon?â⬠Keller didnââ¬â¢t smile. ââ¬Å"No, of course not. Donââ¬â¢t be silly. I donââ¬â¢t know what he can do-but a dragon is what he is. Inside.â⬠Winnie suddenly looked queasy as this hit home. Keller turned back to Galen. ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s what you let loose on the world. It was the only chance to kill him-nobody will be able to take him by surprise like that again. Which means that everything he does after this is going to be your fault.â⬠Galen shut his eyes, looking dizzy. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry. But when I saw you-I couldnââ¬â¢t let you dieâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m expendable. I donââ¬â¢t know who you are, but Iââ¬â¢m willing to bet youââ¬â¢re expendable. The only one here who isnââ¬â¢t expendable is her.â⬠Keller jerked a thumb at Iliana, who lay in a pool of pale silver-gold hair on the seat beside Galen. ââ¬Å"And if you think that dragon isnââ¬â¢t going to come back and try to get her again, youââ¬â¢re crazy. Iââ¬â¢d have died happy knowing that Iââ¬â¢d gotten rid of him.â⬠Galenââ¬â¢s eyes were open again, and Keller saw a flicker in them at the ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t know who you are.â⬠But at the end, he said quietly, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m expendable. And Iââ¬â¢m sorry. I didnââ¬â¢t thinkâ⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s right! You didnââ¬â¢t! And now the whole world is going to suffer.â⬠Galen shut up and sat back. And Keller felt odd. She wasnââ¬â¢t sorry for slapping him down, she told herself. He deserved it. But his face was so pale now, and his expression was so bleak. As if heââ¬â¢d not only understood everything sheââ¬â¢d said but expanded on it in his own mind. And the look of hurt in his eyes was almost insupportable. Good, Keller told herself. But then she remembered the moment sheââ¬â¢d spent inside his mind. It had been a sunlit place, warm and open, without dark corners or shadowed crevasses. Now that would be gone forever. There was going to be a huge black fissure in it, full of horror and shame. A mark he would carry for the rest of his life. Well, welcome to the real world, Keller thought, and her throat tightened and hurt. She stared out the window angrily. ââ¬Å"See, itââ¬â¢s really important that we keep Iliana safe,â⬠Winfrith was saying quietly to Galen. He didnââ¬â¢t ask why, and Keller had noticed before that he hadnââ¬â¢t asked why Iliana wasnââ¬â¢t expendable. But Winnie went on telling him anyway. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s a Wild Power. You know about those?â⬠ââ¬Å"Who doesnââ¬â¢t these days?â⬠He said it almost in a whisper. ââ¬Å"Well, most humans, for one thing. But sheââ¬â¢s not just a Wild Power; sheââ¬â¢s the Witch Child. Somebody we witches have been expecting for centuries. The prophecies say sheââ¬â¢s going to unite the shape-shifters and the witches. Sheââ¬â¢s going to marry the son of the First House of the shapeshifters. And then the two races will be united, and all the shapeshifters will join Circle Daybreak, and well be able to hold off the end of the world at the millennium.â⬠Winnie finished out of breath. Then she cocked her strawberry-blond head. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t seem surprised. Who are you, guy? You didnââ¬â¢t really say before.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me?â⬠He was still looking into the distance. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m nobody, compared to you people.â⬠Then he gave a little wry smile that didnââ¬â¢t reach his eyes. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m expendable.â⬠Nissa caught Kellerââ¬â¢s eye in the rearview mirror, looking concerned. Keller just shrugged. Sure, Winnie was telling this expendable guy a lot. But it didnââ¬â¢t matter. He wasnââ¬â¢t on the enemy side; and anyway, the enemy knew everything Winnie was saying. They had identified Iliana as the third Wild Power; the dragon proved that. They wouldnââ¬â¢t have sent him if they hadnââ¬â¢t been sure. But still, it was time to get rid of this interfering boy. They certainly couldnââ¬â¢t take him to the safe house where they were taking Iliana. ââ¬Å"Nobody tailing us?â⬠Keller said. Nissa shook her head. ââ¬Å"We lost them all miles ago.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Dead certain.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Take any exit, and weââ¬â¢ll drop him off.â⬠She turned to Galen. ââ¬Å"I hope you can find your way home.â⬠ââ¬ËI want to go with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry. We have important things to do.â⬠Keller didnââ¬â¢t need to add, And youââ¬â¢re not part of them. ââ¬Å"Look.â⬠Galen took a deep breath. His pale face was strained and exhausted, as if heââ¬â¢d somehow lost three daysââ¬â¢ sleep since heââ¬â¢d gotten into the limo. And there was something close to desperation in his eyes. ââ¬Å"I need to go with you. I need to help, to try and make up for what I did. I need to make it right.â⬠ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t.â⬠Keller said it even more brusquely than she meant to. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re not trained, and youââ¬â¢re not involved in this. Youââ¬â¢re no good.â⬠He gave her a look. It didnââ¬â¢t disagree with anything sheââ¬â¢d said, but somehow, for just an instant, it made her feel small. His greeny-gold eyes were just the opposite of the dragonââ¬â¢s opaque ones. Keller could see for miles in them, endless light-filled fathoms, and it was all despair. A sorrow so great that it shook her. She knew it must be costing him a lot to show her that, to hold himself so open and vulnerable. But he kept looking at her steadily. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t understand,â⬠he said quietly. I have to help you. I have to try, at least. I know Iââ¬â¢m not in your class as a fighter. But Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He hesitated. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t want to say this-ââ¬Å" At that moment, Iliana groaned and sat up. Or tried to. She didnââ¬â¢t make it all the way. She put a hand to her head and started to fall off the seat. Galen steadied her, putting an arm around her to keep her propped up. ââ¬Å"Are you all right?â⬠Keller asked. She leaned forward, trying to get a look at the girlââ¬â¢s face. Winnie was leaning forward, too, her expression eager. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢re you feeling? Youââ¬â¢re not really hurt, are you? You just fainted from the shock.â⬠Diana looked around the limousine. She seemed utterly confused and disoriented. Keller was struck again by the girlââ¬â¢s unearthly beauty. This close, she looked like a flower, or maybe a girl made from flowers. She had peach-blossom skin and hazy iris-colored eyes. Her hair was like corn silk, fine and shimmering even in this dim light. Her hands were small and graceful, fingers half curled like flower petals. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s such an honor to meet you,â⬠Winnie said, and her voice turned formal as she uttered the traditional greeting of the witches. ââ¬Å"Unity, Daughter of Hellewise. Iââ¬â¢m Winfrith Arlin.â⬠She dimpled. ââ¬Å"But itââ¬â¢s really ââ¬ËArm-of-Lightning.ââ¬â¢ My familyââ¬â¢s an old one, almost as old as yours.â⬠Diana stared at her. Then she stared at the back of Nissaââ¬â¢s mink-colored head. Then her eyes slid to Keller. Then she sucked in a deep breath and started screaming. While the profitability of corporations is typically measured in dollars, overall success can be measured in terms of profitability plus the attainment of organizational goals. This success derives from a synergy of inputs, including the work of employees who are dedicated, skilled and knowledgeable, and a management team that understands how to inspire competent and motivated performance through sensitive and responsive management of a continually changing workplace. The cost of socially-responsible management is an investment: the workplace environment directly impacts the motivation and productivity of the workforce. Simply put: happy, secure workers are productive workers. Companies are responsible for creating and maintaining a positive and supportive workplace environment through ethically responsible policies, fair compensation and proactive management. While not quantifiable as a line item, an attitude of responsibility to workers and to the workplace environment has a n oticeable effect on the corporate bottom line. According to Alan Reder in his book In Pursuit of Principle and Profit (1994), responsible policies ensure that every quality of a company will emerge over time and greatly increase a companys chances of long-term success. Workplace issues of employee satisfaction include job security, fair wage and salary levels, equitable distribution of benefits, training and career enhancement opportunities that integrate to create an environment that fosters motivation, high performance and maximized productivity.

The History of American Slang Essays
The History of American Slang Essays The History of American Slang Essay The History of American Slang Essay When thinking of American slang, you may think that is just something that youth have made up to make themselves sound cool when they speak. This is not the case. Slang has been used in America since the late 1800ââ¬â¢s. It is defined as ââ¬Å"a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.â⬠A lot of slang that was used back then is still used today. I will give just a brief overview of popular slang that has been used over the last century. By the 18th century, the differences between American English and other English speaking countries began the evolution of slang. For a while, any word not used in Britain was considered slang. As early as 1870, slang was prominent in the early years of the United States. The word ââ¬Å"badâ⬠has been used to mean ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dudeâ⬠to refer to a guy, for example, were some of the first slang to be used among Americans. Each decade has originated its own slang that has stood out from the decade prior. Here are a few common slang words and expressions from recent decades. From the 1950ââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"boo booâ⬠to mean a mistake, ââ¬Å"garbageâ⬠to mean nonsense and ââ¬Å"hotâ⬠to describe someone attractive were commonly used. In the 1960ââ¬â¢s, the terms ââ¬Å"far outâ⬠meaning amazing, using ââ¬Å"hassleâ⬠instead of annoy and getting good ââ¬Å"vibesâ⬠, or feelings, were popular. The 1970ââ¬â¢s originated words such as ââ¬Å"bogusâ⬠to replace unfair, ââ¬Å"grossâ⬠to mean something disgusting and ââ¬Å"no brainer, to describe an easy problem. From the 1980ââ¬â¢s, 1990ââ¬â¢s, and 2000ââ¬â¢s there were quite a few phrases originated that are still prominent in todayââ¬â¢s society. For example; using ââ¬Å"cribâ⬠instead of house, ââ¬Å"blingâ⬠for jewelry or glitter, ââ¬Å"hoodâ⬠to describe a juvenile delinquent and ââ¬Å"buzzâ⬠, referring to someone shaving their head. Most rec

Understanding and Implementing Array Data Types in Delphi
Understanding and Implementing Array Data Types in Delphi Arrays allow us to refer to a series of variables by the same name and to use a number (an index) to call out individual elements in that series. Arrays have both upper and lower boundsà and the elements of the array are contiguous within those bounds. Elements of the array are values that are all of the same type (string, integer, record, custom object). In Delphi, there are two types of arrays: a fixed-size array which always remains the same sizeaà static arrayand a dynamic array whose size can change at runtime. Static Arrays Suppose we are writing a program that lets a user enter some values (e.g. the number of appointments) at the beginning of each day. We would choose to store the information in a list. We could call this list Appointments, and each number might be stored as Appointments[1], Appointments[2], and so on. To use the list, we must first declare it. For example: var Appointments : array[0..6] of Integer; declares a variable called Appointments that holds a one-dimensional array (vector) of 7 integer values. Given this declaration, Appointments[3] denotes the fourth integer value in Appointments. The number in the brackets is called the index. If we create a static array but donââ¬â¢t assign values to all its elements, the unused elements contain random data; they are like uninitialized variables. The following code can be used to set all elements in the Appointments array to 0. for k : 0 to 6 do Appointments[k] : 0; Sometimes we need to keep track of related information in an array. For example, to keep track of each pixel on your computer screen, you need to refer to its X and Y coordinates using a multidimensional array to store the values. With Delphi, we can declare arrays of multiple dimensions. For example, the following statement declares a two-dimensional 7 by 24 array: var DayHour : array[1..7, 1..24] of Real; To compute the number of elements in a multidimensional array, multiply the number of elements in each index. The DayHour variable, declared above, sets aside 168 (7*24) elements, in 7 rows and 24 columns. To retrieve the value from the cell in the third row and seventh column we would use: DayHour[3,7] or DayHour[3][7]. The following code can be used to set all elements in the DayHour array to 0. for i : 1 to 7 do for j : 1 to 24 do DayHour[i,j] : 0; Dynamic Arrays You may not know exactly how large to make an array. You may want to have the capability of changing the size of the array at runtime. A dynamic array declares its type, but not its size. The actual size of a dynamic array can be changed at runtime by the use of the SetLength procedure. var Students : array of string; creates a one-dimensional dynamic array of strings. The declaration does not allocate memory for Students. To create the array in memory, we call SetLength procedure. For example, given the declaration above, SetLength(Students, 14) ; allocates an array of 14 strings, indexed 0 to 13. Dynamic arrays are always integer-indexed, always starting from 0 to one less than their size in elements. To create a two-dimensional dynamic array, use the following code: var Matrix: array of array of Double; begin SetLength(Matrix, 10, 20) end; which allocates space for a two-dimensional, 10-by-20 array of Double floating-point values. To remove a dynamic arrays memory space, assign nil to the array variable, like: Matrix : nil; Very often, your program doesnt know at compile time how many elements will be needed; that number will not be known until runtime. With dynamic arrays, you can allocate only as much storage as is required at a given time. In other words, the size of dynamic arrays can be changed at runtime, which is one of the key advantages of dynamic arrays. The next example creates an array of integer values and then calls the Copy function to resize the array. var Vector: array of Integer; k : integer; begin SetLength(Vector, 10) ; for k : Low(Vector) to High(Vector) do Vector[k] : i*10; ... //now we need more space SetLength(Vector, 20) ; //here, Vector array can hold up to 20 elements //(it already has 10 of them)end; The SetLength function creates a larger (or smaller) array and copies the existing values to the new array. The Low and High functions ensure you access every array element without looking back in your code for the correct lower and upper index values.

This is an implication that my body weight is normal and hence I should strive to maintain the weight by eating a balanced diet and engaging in physical activities. According to the calorie assessment report, I need to intake 2031 calories in order to maintain my current weight. However, my current intake is below the goal. My current average calorie intake is 1065. This implies that I am bound to lose more weight if I maintain my current eating patterns (Veitch 87). There are nutrients that are still deficient and others in excess in the revised diet. The significant nutrients that are still deficient in the revised diet are Calories from saturated Fat and dietary fiber. Perhaps I was unable to get dietary fiber because I did not include foods rich in fiber. In addition, the foods that I included in the revised diet were not fatty and hence the deficiency of fat as noted in the revised diet. On the contrary, the revised diet also had some nutrients in excess. These included proteins, Vitamin B3 - Niacin (mg), Vitamin B12 (mcg), Phosphorus (mg), Vitamin C and Zinc. These statistics came about as a result of the meat, chicken and turkey sausages that I included in the revised diet as having been taking in only one day. Their quantities also contributed to the excess levels of proteins as noted in the bar graph report for the revised diet. As noted in the bar graph report for my diet on that day, I am a poor observant of a balanced diet and for this reason I need to implement corrective measures in order to improve my eating patterns and food types (Veitch 46). It is through this that I will be in a position to not only stay healthy but also maintain my body weight as recommended from the BMI report. As a result, I will take certain

Comparison Between Grapes Of W :: essays research papers
People who feel trapped often do desperate things that affect themselves and others. “Fifth Business'; and “The Grapes of Wrath'; are two novels that both consist of trapped characters that are affected physically, emotionally, and socially. These elements are the very foundation of entrapment, which lead to the downfall of the characters. Mary from the novel “Fifth Business'; and Grampa from “The Grapes of Wrath'; are two characters that have a fatal flaw in their lives and characteristics that lead to their destruction. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Mary and Grampa are the two characters that can be portrayed as being physically trapped. Mary is physically trapped by her own actions. When she meets a tramp in the gravel pit, she allows him to make love to her. This event causes her husband Amasa to resign from his job as a Baptist Minister due to shame and disgrace. After this happening Amasa keeps her tied in a harness so she cannot get out of the house. Mary’s actions affect and ruin her family life. Later in the story it is mentioned that she is in a small hospital behind bars and often under sedation due to her abusive behavior towards Dunstan Ramsay. Dunstan is the one who has cared most for her during her life; however, she considers him her worst enemy for keeping her son away from her. Her physical entrapment due to her behavior and actions, eventually lead to her death. Grampa is also physically trapped, because of his old age. His inability to move around freely has an impact on his lifestyle. Grampa is always trapped in his household and in the vehicle the family is travelling in to get to California. When he does not wish to travel, he is drugged and is forced to go on the journey. Now the entrapment can be seen in the truck; he is physically unable to do anything and ultimately dies. He is not able to go anywhere and is restricted to visit places due to his old age. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Emotional entrapment is one of the major factors in the destruction of the characters. Mary is emotionally trapped in the past. Even years after her son ran away, she still feels that he is a little boy. Her emotional condition ultimately drives her insane. Her insanity changes her thoughts and ideas. This can be seen when she blames Dunstan for keeping her son away from her.

Effects Of Caffeine On Our Health - 959 Words
Lately Americans have had a need for speed, an average of about 44% of people in the workforce claim they canââ¬â¢t commute or have a conversation without coffee in the morning (Kilcarr). The need for caffeine by most Americans has come to an all time high with people trying to do more than ever before. However, there are now multiple ways for people to get their much needed caffeine fix. Whether that be through energy drinks or a new form of powdered caffeine, people still have a need for it. The FDA released information in 2007 stating that the Americans consumed an average of 200 mg of caffeine every day, but according to Johns Hopkins Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit as of early 2015 it has increased to an average of 280 milligrams consumed daily (ââ¬Å"Medicines in My Homeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Caffeine Dependenceâ⬠). Lack of sleep, discovery of powdered caffeine, more caffeine in an average cup of coffee than previous years, and caffeine addictiveness could all be fa ctors that led to the increase in daily caffeine consumption. Studies have shown that the average American is not getting enough sleep. A survey conducted by Gallup in 2013 concluded that on average adults are getting about 6.8 hours of sleep (Payden-Travers). According to the National Sleep Foundation, that is not enough. They recommend adults over the age of 18 to get seven to nine hours every night (ââ¬Å"How Much Sleepâ⬠). Automobile Marketing free essay sample
This paper compares and contrasts the marketing strategies for promoting fleets versus individual vehicles. An examination of how advertising campaigns change their focus when promoting individual vehicles over fleets of cars. It shows how individual vehicles are pushed to be seen as status symbols and how ones peers will be envious, while buyers of fleets are looking for mechanical reliability and technical quality. In marketing for individual consumers as opposed to business consumers for fleet sales. It is important that the marketer focuses on several key points. First, marketers must look at the desirability factor. Consumers more often than not, look view automobiles as a status symbol. They want a vehicle that will help them reach a certain status or raise their image in the face of their peers. Traditionally, marketers focus in on how an automobile will help raise the status quo and how others will envy the consumer who decides to buy a particular model. In fact, in order to keep up with the trend of reaching younger wealthier consumers who are willing to shell out more money for vehicles than some older consumers, automobile makers are creating several new models that will appeal to the younger buyer who would prefer luxury vehicles (Halliday). Consumers are buying lower-end vehicles, but marketers would rather focus on the small segment of consumers with rather expensive taste. This is of the utmost of importance in a tight economy.

It became an iconic brand in the 20th century b ecause it was popularised by celebrities and foreigners who were enamoured with a no nonsense British style as well as the Burberry check that has become instantly recognisable all over the world. But in recent years the brand had fallen on hard times due to intense competition, negative effect of counterfeits goods and the mismanagement of the licenses that were given out to business partners. Today, the Burberry brand is on the rebound thanks to perceptive business leaders that were brought in to fix the problems that ail the company. The following is a more detailed view of what occurred in the past and the changes that were made to make Burberry relevant even after 150 years of existence. The Environmental Factors that Affected the Marketing of Burberry Environmental factors played a major part in the transformation of Burberry from a fledgling company into a global brand. But before going any further it is important to point out what it means. According to experts, environmenta l factors comprise the marketing environment and it is ââ¬Å"the range of external and internal factors that affect the way in which an organisation interacts with its markets.â⬠[1] Another way to look at a companyââ¬â¢s marketing environment is to see the actors and forces that affects its ability to develop and maintain successful transactions with regards to its target market.[2] Burberryââ¬â¢s marketing environment consists of a macro-environment and a micro-environment. Macro-Environmental Analysis A companyââ¬â¢s macro-environment is composed of all the complex and uncontrollable variables that when taken together forms a framework within which it is able to conduct business.[3] This includes government regulations, current events that indirectly or indirectly affected the operations of the company and a host of other issues that are mostly beyond the grasp of the corporate leaders of Burberry.[4] One aspect of this firmââ¬â¢s macro-environment is the fact th at it operates within a global luxury market. In recent years Burberryââ¬â¢s macro-environment is greatly affected by the recession. It has been reported that the global luxury market declined by around nine percent. This is a direct result of the economic downturn that forced many customers to develop austerity measures and as many are aware, in the event of cost-cutting measures, the first thing that consumers can live without are luxury goods. Since Burberry is not the only company that sells premium products the recession has created intense competition among the players in the luxury global market.[5] This is an environmental factor that Burberry has limited or zero control and the best way that the company can do is to adapt to the changes that occurs externally.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on The Burberry Company Marketing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Finally, the firm was greatly affected by the proliferation of counterfeit products. According to company representatives the actions of counterfeiters is damaging to the reputation of the company and will erode confidence in the Burberry brand in the long run. This is because a customer will buy an item that they believe is an authentic product coming from authorised dealers of Burberry products and will later experience problems commonly associated with shoddy manufacturing practices. As a result they will no longer trust the Burberry brand. Even if this happens all over the world this is an example of a macro-environmental factor that the company has some control and they deal with it by partnering with other firms that sell luxury goods to prevent counterfeiting. They also partner with government agencies in countries where counterfeiters are doing brisk business. Not all of the macro-environment factors that directly affected Burberry was necessarily bad for the firm. The weak pound was beneficial to a struggling firm whe n consumers suddenly discovered that Burberry products are priced competitively as opposed to other luxury brands. A major consequence of that is the influx of overseas visitors to the United Kingdom because these shoppers can see that the products are priced cheaper. This was made possible by the fact that the firm continuous to create products that are classic in design and therefore these items can still be used for a very long time and added to the benefit of buying the Burberry brand. Micro-Environmental Analysis The firmââ¬â¢s micro-environment on the other hand is composed of all the variables that are closer to the firm and to some extent it can be controlled.[6] One example is the decision to create different product lines to cater to different segments of the luxury goods market. Another example is the target market that the firm chooses to serve and the kind of distribution system that they will utilise to increase the efficiency and lower overhead costs. Another aspec t of the micro-environment is the way the company developed its image. It came to a point when British and American consumers saw Burberry as an Asian brand therefore lowering its perceived value in the eyes of these consumers. They also saw the firm as nothing more than a raincoat company. The apparel produced by the company became widely accessible even to average consumers that the clientà ¨le belonging to the upper middle-class bracket began to look at Burberry with a certain level of disdain. If that was not enough mismanagement of the companyââ¬â¢s resources and neglect in terms of taking care of the image of the company led to over-licensing and soon the iconic check brand began to flood the market. People began seeing the Burberry brand stamped on many products from court shoes to baby buggies. Since these are part of the micro-environmental factors that are affecting the firm, the company has relative control over it. This means that they can do something to minimise th e negative impact to their business.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The company was able to hit two birds with one stone when it pulled back and became more conservative when it comes to giving licenses to business partners. As a result the market is no longer flooded with Burberry products. It suddenly became a premium brand once again in the eyes of the customers both the new and the old. By dealing with the licensing problems the company was also able to focus more on developing their products. This proved to be beneficial when the firm decided to segment the market and focused on their target market. Criteria and Segmentation Methods Used Segmentation is the deliberate process of not looking at the market as a whole but breaking it down into groups of people that share similar needs, characteristics and aspirations.[7] It also means knowing the target market well in order to give them what they want or may want in the future.[8] This means that a firm utilising this strategy is not overly concern with mass marketing and trying to get their produ cts into the hands of as many people as they can. It is now clear that consumers have a wide array of products to choose from and they will definitely buy something that fits their needs and not some generic product created for everyone. The segmentation method that was adapted by Burberry was to look at their traditional source of revenue and the type of customers that were loyal to the brand. They were able to determine that the Burberry brand was known for its iconic check but at the same time limited its appeal to customers who belonged to a bygone era of waterproofed raincoats and love for everything that is British. They realised that they need to change and transform its image if it wants to penetrate other markets especially those outside Europe and the emerging markets that can be found in booming China, India, and Russia. Segmentation Strategy Over Time In the case of Burberry the segmentation evolved through time. Not a long time ago Burberry focused on producing a luxury ready-to-wear and accessories line that will serve consumers within UK. After a major success of repeatedly doing the same thing, the company began to realize that it made money from foreigners coming in as tourists and attracted to the the cultural aspect of the brand and buying some as some form of a souvenir. But that was all that there is into their segmentation process. However, in the late 20th century up until the early part of the 21st century the urgency to create segmentations in the market could no longer be denied. As a consequence there is now a product and brand hierarchy. In the past there was nothing similar to this strategy but today one can find that there is such a thing as a Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London, and the Burberry Brit.[9] The Burberry Prorsum is the high-end of all three. It is the byproduct of the fashion shows held annually and created for the purpose of providing fashion forward items that were on display in the catwalk to paying customers who ar e eager to have a piece of the collection. The image of this brand was enhanced when it was made known that celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Liv Tyler and Gwyneth Paltrow were some of the clients that pay good money to acquire products under the Prorsum line.[10] The second tier is labelled as Burberry London and it is comprised of apparel that are priced in the mid-range and in addition these are designed to be used in week day or work wear. Obviously this is more affordable than the Prorsum line but it caters to people that wanted quality but less expensive clothing that can be used in the offices or in their businesses. It has to be smart and yet at the same time with enough substance and style to capture a particular segment of the market, specifically the professionals who needed a work wear that is of high-quality and yet more affordable than those found in the Prorsum product range. According to Burberry the Burberry London product line is composed of the more tailored prod ucts and at the same time uses beat check and tonal check branding strategies.[11] The segmentation of the market also prompted the firm to delineate the biggest apparel segment and thus giving rise to Burberry Brit which is a product range that caters to those looking for more casual wear. In the case of the Brit the company decided to be more innovative and thus created a more contemporary version of the core iconic check of the said brand.[12] The main reason for creating these changes is to target a segment of the market and a company spokesman said that their goal was to attract a new group of luxury consumers that are new to the brand and yet at the same time maintaining their connection to the old way of doing things and this means using the iconic check. Another consequence of segmentation is to develop new markets outside the UK and even outside Europe. Thus, in 2010 European sales accounted for 44% of sales while the Americas accounted for 27% and Asia Pacific follows with 24% in sales.[13] In addition emerging markets added to the revenue by pumping in 10% this includes sales coming from China, India, Russia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.[14] Marketing Mix Variables A company controls four important elements of marketing and these are: product, price, distribution and promotion.[15] If the firm is able to combine all four together to create a potent market mix then it will result in a matrix that will enable the company to reach a particular target market.[16] In other words consumers are not going to buy a particular product simply because of its quality but as a result of a well-crafted market mix. Surely the quality of a particular product figures highly in the decision-making process, however, that is not the only consideration or the only factor that will make a consumer decide to buy a particular brand. The corporate leaders at Burberry realised that it is not enough to produce a high-quality product like the Burberry check there is a ne ed to determine the correct price and the proper way to market it so that the people who can afford will go out of their way to buy their products. Aside from that the Burberry brand also made the decision that it is now time recreate the firm so that it will not only be known as a producer of trench coats and apparel linked to British culture. Thus, they began to focus more on their segmented markets and as a result of that came up with different products such as men, women, and childrenââ¬â¢s wear. They also sell shoes, perfumes, and accessories like handbags, leather goods, and scarves.[17] Rationale of Marketing Mix Variables The purpose of creating this marketing mix is to increase revenue by tapping into markets that was not possible with the old set-up. By being creative when it comes to product offerings, pricing, marketing and even the logistics behind the distribution of the said products can easily increase Burberryââ¬â¢s slice into the luxury goods market. Their de cision to change their marketing mix yielded results in 2010 based on the number of global retail stores. They had 139 retail stores located all over the globe as well as 140 concessions, 44 outlets and 97 franchise stores.[18] The company scored big when it made the decision to modify the way they sell their products. Instead of relying on traditional direct retail stores they now added digital commerce by selling items online. They also created a system wherein they can sell wholesale to prestigious department stores such as Harrods and Selfridges. At the same time the market mix is made more interesting by licensing deals that allow other companies to tap into the Burberry brand when manufacturing and selling products such as perfume, eyewear and watches. The company makes money in a different way and this is done through royalty income coming from licensing channels such as firms that are located in Europe, North America, and Asia. The best example of applying the principles of creating a marketing mix can be seen in the firmââ¬â¢s decision to develop the Burberry Brit. In this product range the company made available more affordable and at the same time sporty apparel. In 2009 the company started selling jeans and casual wear. However, there is still no mistaking the fact that these products came from Burberry because one can expect quilted jackets and over-sized wool duffel coats for women and for men there are chinos and cotton tees.[19] Digital Marketing Tools One component of e-commerce is the use of computer software and hardware to deliver ââ¬Å"advertising contentâ⬠to consumers. Traditionally, the job of advertisers centered on the use of TV and radio ads. The problem with the old method is cost-efficiency. Companies can spend a lot of money for TV ads, without realizing that consumers can easily change channels or go to the bathroom during commercial breaks. The use of technology in marketing will eliminate this wastage because ââ¬Å"ad vertising contentâ⬠can be delivered where consumers are sure to focus on the message. Advantages of Digital Marketing Tools In a global business environment competition is intense. The only way to survive is to ensure that the Burberry is always one step ahead of its competitors and in order for the firm to do that it has to develop a quick and effective decision-making process.[20] There is only one way to achieve that and it is to have access to all the pertinent information regarding sales forecast, market conditions, sales, production data and other information that is required by business leaders most especially the CEO to make crucial decisions.[21] Burberry quickly understood the importance of an information system that will keep leaders well informed.[22] On the other hand it was easy to understand the challenges in moving from one method of doing business to one that is more technology based.[23] According to experts in the field, ââ¬Å"In the past, companies have st ruggled to make decisions because of the lack of data. But in the current environment, more and more organisations are struggling to overcome ââ¬Ëinformation paralysisââ¬â¢ ââ¬â there is so much data available that it is difficult to determine what is relevant.â⬠[24] This clearly explains the need for more intelligent data management systems even if executives are having a hard time adjusting to technological changes. Nevertheless, they have to adapt or perish. On the other hand it is imperative for senior executives to learn how to use IT without having to spend time going through the fundamentals on how to use the PC or learn the intricacies of software and hardware. The solution that was adapted by the company was to use supply chain management software. This was complemented by digital marketing schemes using Facebook, YouTube, and podcasts. They also launched the social networking website called the Artofthetrench.com.[25] This is where people come to share phot os of themselves wearing the Burberryââ¬â¢s trademark trench coat.[26] They also have their own YouTube channel and developed an iPhone app that allow their customers to buy online. In the short-term the company has already seen a 60% growth in e-commerce. This means that there is tremendous potential but much has to be seen in later years of the company is able to capitalise on new technology and new way of marketing their products using the World-Wide-Web. Disadvantages of Digital Marketing Tools The disadvantages of using digital marketing tools is the significant cost that are added to their system. Aside from the expense there is no way of efficiently maximising the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of unique visitors to the site. It may seem like they have created something significant but without the ability to translate these activities and the hype it generated into sales then the company is simply wasting resources for something that does not affect the bottom-l ine of the company. Conclusion The Burberry brand is an icon in the British fashion industry for more than a century. It has suffered setbacks because of mismanagement and the inability of past leaders to properly apply marketing principles. But when perceptive business leaders were hired to correct some of the glaring mistakes the company was able to reverse its fortunes. One of the best strategies used was the segmentation of the market. This was followed up by the cration of product ranges like the Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London, and the Burberry Brit. This allowed the company to offer a wider set of choices for its clientà ¨le and as a result were also able to penetrate markets that were inaccessible in the past. Recommendations The firm has to continue looking into improving the way they delineate their products to be able to take a bigger slice of the fashion industry. This means that when it comes to the Prorsum line they should create luxurious items that will give them the ability to make in roads into the market currently dominated by brands like LVMH and Gucci. At the same time they should create products that would allow them to improve their casual product lines. There is also a need to take a closer look at their digital marketing and determine if they are converting website visits into actual sales. It is simply too early to celebrate victory in terms of the way they were able to increase awareness of their products. The bottom line is still the measuring stick for success.
